Three years ago (2004), several volunteers had traveled to Haiti on a church medical mission. The purpose of our mission was to bring medicine and medical treatment to the poverty stricken of Moron, Haiti.

On that occasion I met Wideline Etienne. She was on a stretcher at our medical clinic in Moron, Haiti. She was lying there with her mouth open, unable to talk. The doctors said she had lock-jaw, and would soon die.

In an effort to try to do something to save her life, we transported her to the hospital in Jeremie, Haiti.

When we arrived at the hospital, we were met by a Haitian doctor, who said he would try to save her life. We gave the doctor $200.00 for medicine, said goodbye to Wideline, and left thinking we would never see her again.

Upon my return to Moron, Haiti the following October, to my surprise, Wideline was alive and well. This was truly a miracle.

I met with Wideline and found she was an orphan living with her aunt, who has since moved to Port au Prince. She is now living with her sister. She wanted me to adopt her, but at my age it wasn’t realistic. I started paying for her school, and leaving money for her with Father Dante, Pastor of the Catholic Church in Moron, Haiti.

I felt she was my responsibility and that I needed to do something for her long-term. I felt I must provide a home for this little girl. I wanted to start an orphanage. I talked to Father Dante and he said he would help. He told me there were 1000 orphans in the Moron area.

The greatest need was for girls. He suggested a non-denominational home. This was the birth of the Christian Girls Home of Moron, Haiti.
